Projects - Albanatscha substation, Julierpass

Albanatscha substation

Location: Julierpass     Year: 1997

The architectural concept is based on the theme of the flow and the power of energy. The building portrays energy flowing into the ground and "elevating" it. The construction precludes comparison with any normal house and looks more like a reinforcement of the terrain due to the quarry-stone from the excavation, and in some cases blast rock, which encase the parts of the building above ground. The side walls continue until they merge into the landscape. The power station's enormous assembly hall, which acts as the operational centre of the plant, is directly accessible from the Julierstrasse through the huge monolithic gate made of raw brass.
